Scoliosis

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. There are certain medications that can lead to scoliosis; however, often the cause is unknown. Scoliosis gets progressively worse over time, and if not treated, can lead to severe spine deformities and disability.

TEAM Physical Therapy is a local leader in scoliosis care. We work closely with a local spine specialist and orthotist to provide comprehensive treatment for scoliosis.

Our licensed physical therapists utilize the Schroth Method, as well as various manual techniques to treat scoliosis. The Schroth Method is evidence based and uses a three-dimensional approach to treating a patient’s specific spine curvature. In children, the Schroth Method can greatly reduce their curvature of the spine, especially when treated before they are done growing. The Schroth Method can also be utilized to reduce pain and dysfunction in adults with scoliosis.

In some cases, physical therapy is the first and primary component of scoliosis treatment. In more severe cases, patients may be required to wear a brace in addition to physical therapy treatment.

Early detection of scoliosis is key. Children ages 10-13 years of age should be watched closely and receive a yearly scoliosis screen. TEAM Physical Therapy performs scoliosis screens at our clinics, as well as at local schools. If you would like a scoliosis screen to determine if you or your child has scoliosis, call any of our clinic locations to schedule an appointment.
